S1E16: Harry in the Underworld

This episode features the discussion of chapter 16 of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with the title ‘Through the Trapdoor’. I try to answer questions such as “Which mythological hero made it past Fluffy first?”, “Did Snape write embarrassing poetry as a teenager?” and “Why does no one ever listen to Neville?”.

The instrumental piece in the episode is the opening toccata from Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo from 1607, which tells the story of Orpheus’s journey into the underworld and is generally considered to be the first modern opera. You can watch a fantastic rendition of the toccata here (though, if you have a spare couple of hours, watch the whole opera):
